Music
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”
PLATO
Children in the school are very fortunate to take part in a range of musical activities. Through these experiences we endeavour to develop each pupil’s sensitivity to, and understanding and enjoyment of, music by taking an active involvement in listening, performing, composing and appraising. By the time the children leave Sutton Veny, we hope that they will be inspired to listen to and appreciate many genres of music, sing with confidence (even if this is only when they are alone!), and have the basic tools to learn an instrument of their choice.
In Year 2 each child is taught to play the ocarina, then in Year 3 and 4 the children apply their musical skills to recorder playing. Through Year 5 and 6 the children learn to play the ukulele.
Music teaching through the school progresses from playing from aural memory and simplified notation to using and understanding a musical stave. The children are also given the opportunity to compose their own rhythms and simple melodies. They learn to play their instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression.
Through topics and themed assemblies the children are trained to listen to, and appreciate, a range of high-quality live and recorded music. This music incorporates different styles and traditions from a variety of cultures, times and places.
