Design & Technology

"Design creates culture. Culture creates values. Values determine the future." Robert L. Peters
Design and Technology Curriculum at Sutton Veny

Our Design and Technology curriculum aims to inspire young innovators and critical thinkers through hands-on learning experiences. We have developed a curriculum where by pupils have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills with which they design, make and evaluate.

Pupils discover different designers, inventors and engineers and learn how they have shaped our world. This knowledge is used to inspire pupils’ own designs and create their own products alongside developing problem solving skills and teamwork.

Along with designing and making, pupils have the chance to test out their design, make changes and evaluate in order to further their knowledge and improve their own work.

The curriculum is structured around key themes which link to the topics each term.

Food Technology

We aim to empower pupils with essential cookery skills and a deep understanding of nutrition. We aim to foster healthy eating habits, encourage creativity and a love of cooking which they can use in their lives outside of school.

Pupils will learn the name of ingredients and are encouraged to explore and taste different foods which they can then choose to use in their own recipe.

We ensure pupils understand the fundamentals of cookery. This involves learning techniques such as chopping, grating, baking and seasoning together with understanding kitchen safety when using tools and appliances and ensuring good hygiene.

Pupils will develop an understanding of nutrition. We look at how food gives our body nutrients, exploring food groups, the importance of eating healthy and varied food and discovering different sources of food.
