Nelson (Year 6)
For the first half-an-hour of the day, the class focus on developing key skills in English and maths. The children work through a daily maths task to improve their mental agility. They will also have a handwriting task, which has a spelling, grammar or punctuation focus. During this time, the children read in groups and work in booster groups or interventions.
English and spelling are taught daily which develops reading, writing and speaking and listening skills. During the terms one and two, the class will be focusing on the following grammar elements: nouns, verbs, subject and object.
Maths is taught daily from Monday to Friday. Nelson Class will develop their mathematical reasoning skills by applying their mathematical knowledge and understanding to a range of different areas of maths.
The class will learn about the concept of creation in term one. The enquiry question is: Science and Creation- Conflicting or Complementary? This gives the class the chance to explore a range of viewpoints and how this impacts on a particular worldview. In term two, using evidence from the old and new testaments, the class will be exploring the question- Was Jesus the Messiah?
History - Amazing Monarchs or Rubbish Rulers?
The main concepts in the history topic in terms one and two are love, power and failure. The class will compare and critique historical events and understand the monarchy who reigned during the Tudor times. Using historical evidence, the class will judge how reliable of a range of primary and secondary sources are and create a chronological framework to illustrate key changes in culture and religion and evaluate the impact this has had on Britain today. Through English, the class will demonstrate their knowledge of the Tudors in a creative way through different genres.

Science
Light
In term one, the class will recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines and use this idea to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye. The class will be completing investigations and they will be using their knowledge of the light spectrum to help explore different phenomena such as: rainbows, colours on soap bubbles, colour filters and objects looking bent in water.

Electricity
In term two, the class will learn and use the correct symbols for the electrical components that make up a circuit. By constructing and investigating different circuits, for different purposes, they will explore voltage and how this will impact on different components in a circuit.

The children will be having voice tuition led by Caroline our voice coach. They will be learning to sing songs from different cultures, explore pitch/rhythm and ostinato, understand phrasing in singing and polish and perform a range of different song.
In term two, the class will design and make a garment using sustainable materials. The children will focus on designing a piece of clothing, making a pattern, pinning, tacking and making the finished product considering the materials they will use.
PE
In term one, the class will be learning Tennis skills on a Monday and Rounders on a Wednesday. In term two, the class will be playing basketball on a Monday and dance on a Thursday.
PSHE
The theme for the following two terms is Relationships. The class will be looking at relationships with their peers, friends and adults and understanding the importance of respecting equality and diversity, including marriage and civil partnerships. They will learn to understand that stereotypes can be unfair, negative or destructive and to identify types of bullying and the responsibilities of bystanders.
Safety and keeping themselves and others safe is an important element where the class will discuss the concept of privacy and recognise who to trust if a relationship is making them unhappy.
