Physical Education
At Sutton Veny Primary School, we are passionate about creating a vibrant culture of aspiration, where each child is not only encouraged but also inspired to uncover their unique potential and transcend their own limits. Our PE programme is meticulously crafted to ignite the same spirit of resilience and determination exemplified by champions like Simone Biles, who famously said, "I'm always trying to push myself to the limit to see what I can do. It's my strong will that I've always had since I was a kid."
We offer a diverse array of sports and activities that cater to all interests and abilities, ensuring that every pupil finds their niche. Our aim is to cultivate not just physical skills, but also essential values like confidence, teamwork, and a genuine passion for physical activity.
Our pupils have the opportunity to learn team games such as netball, tag rugby, tri-golf, hockey, football, tennis and handball. Furthermore, within our compass schools group and through the West Wiltshire Schools Sports Partnership (WWSSP), the children have the opportunity to regularly attend tournaments and festivals. Through WWSSP, the children experience an annual KS1 and 2 dance festival in Bath and an orienteering festival in Southleigh Woods. Meeting children in their year groups from other local schools helps to them to form links, which is a great stepping stone prior to starting secondary school.
Our year 6 sports ambassadors, who receive training through WWSSP, help to coordinate lunchtime inter-house tournaments and a regular break time run around our school field. Any house points earned during these events contribute to the overall house points at the end of the school year. The grand finale in our sporting calendar is sports day. This is an event open to the children and their families, where they can share their house pride and enjoy team events.
At Sutton Veny, our Key Stage 1 PE curriculum focuses on helping young pupils develop fundamental movement skills, building their confidence and competence in a fun, supportive environment. Through a wide range of activities, children work on improving their agility, balance, and coordination, both individually and with their peers. They participate in a variety of physical challenges that encourage both cooperation and healthy competition, helping them learn to engage with others and build teamwork skills. The children develop movements such as running, jumping and landing, hopping, stopping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance and coordination. Pupils also enjoy participating in simple team games, where they start to understand basic tactics for attacking and defending. Additionally, they explore creativity and self-expression through performing dances using simple movement patterns, building a strong foundation for lifelong physical activity.
At Sutton Veny, our Key Stage 2 PE curriculum is designed to help pupils develop a broad range of physical skills and learn to apply them in various ways. The children build on their skills learned during KS1 applying them to team games and competitions. Pupils in years 3, 4 and 5 will take swimming lessons at Warminster sports centre to ensure that each child meets the government requirement of being able to swim 25 metres and being taught water safety before leaving KS2. The Children are encouraged to reflect on their own performances during a PE lesson to help them become inspired to make continuous progress and achieve their personal best. These early experiences in PE will not only support their health and fitness but also equip them with confidence, teamwork, and perseverance that will positively impact their lives as they grow older.
